Christian theology is unique in that it revolves around the forgiveness of Jesus Christ when it comes to humanity's sins, and the original sin from which it all sprang:
"And when you stand praying, if you hold anything against anyone, forgive them, so that your Father in heaven may forgive you your sins. Love prospers when a fault is forgiven, while dwelling on it separates close friends."
For people are not perfect.. nor do they need to be to do the Lord's work in life as it is in heaven. There is a natural vindictiveness which exists in people generally, as worldly frustration accumulates and it grows easier for people to lose faith in each other, their future, and the goodness of humanity as a whole. I have personally witnessed the difference between people who attend church, and people who do not embrace Christ -- for those 14-year old athiests who feel enlightened, not from any phony God's blessing, but because of their intelligence, you'll end up disillusioned when you'll eventually realise that nobody is going to die for 2 + 2 = 4, but they will offer their lives to save others with Christ by their side.
Without faith, there is no courage, no capacity for love, and ugliness easily prevails on such unhallowed ground, where intelligence is wielded in the aid of essential cowardice.
In Se7en, John Doe has planned and committed these grotesque performance art murders, each themed after each deadly sin, upon figures he's deemed fit for punishment. Movie enthusiasts to this day still debate whether he is justified or not, weighing in the unusual degree of cruelty placed in these murders, the circumstances of John Doe's life and history, and the misery present under Los Angeles's rain.
The question: if a person believes that X is true with all their heart, even risking it all and sacrificing their entire life for the idea, does it necessarily make X true? Here's a hint: No. For otherwise, mental patients must be saints in tenaciously and obstinately clinging onto disproven delusions:
There was an online friend I'd once met from Ecuador, who I ended up parting ways after an emotional schism over some chick. One of the things I remember during our last days is how he'd repeat to me this mantra, which went like "Oh, God bless you, we are still friends, thanks to you I renounced violence--" as if he'd became a hippie, hopelessly entranced by weed. No matter what I'd say to him, even telling the cold hard truth about how I actually felt about our relationship in his face, he'd still repeat the same lines while doing nothing about anything, so I left.
Rumour has it that every night in his dreams.. whenever he sees me, he still feels his nose growing larger than his erection. That is how I know when to sneeze, far across the distance.
Anyways, in John Doe's case, the confusion revolves around his use of Christianity and bringing "sins" to light in a way that people would never forget.. for the ostensible purpose of inducing good to the world. Except he never says the latter part:
John Doe: Only in a world this shitty.. could you even try to say these were innocent people and keep a straight face. But that's the point: we see a deadly sin on every street corner, in every home, and we tolerate it. We tolerate it because it's common, it's trivial. We tolerate it morning, noon, and night. Well not anymore. I'm setting the example. And what I've done.. is going to be puzzled over, and studied, and followed.. forever.
This is before the shocking climax where he wants Detective Mills to suicide him, upon revealing that he's decapitated Mills' wife and lost her unborn child. (The "Fragile: Handle With Care" box sticker isn't just in reference to the contents of the box, but also with how fragile a human life really is, along with the accompanying sense of daily normalcy.)
Contrarian mid-wits would argue that human sacrifice is a necessary evil to achieve magnificence and make a true difference, but this is just stupid: Jesus Christ didn't slay or maim anyone in God's name before his sacrifice on the cross and eventual resurrection.
On the other hand, there is the Aztecs who sacrificed their own in ritualistic bloodthirst atop Templo Mayor to appease the angry gods, but that didn't stop them from becoming historically extinct. There's also the self-declared "prophet" Muhammad ibn Abdullah, who founded the barbaric doctrine Islam (lit. submission) in A.D. 610, with one of its unspoken purposes being to encourage the brutal conquest and subjugation of Islam's enemies by waged jihad. You know, there are young Muslim men from North Africa today, who have nothing better to do in their lives besides soccer and tricking romantically hopeless women from the West online into giving them money and residential visas (via marriage), because intolerant Islam sees women more as property for men than as individuals:
And for all the complaints about making reparations to slavery in America, you hear nothing about what people suffered through in the Islamic slave trade. That's "magnificence" for you.Qur'an chapter 4, verse 34 [Pickthall translation]: Men are in charge of women, because Allah hath made the one of them to excel the other, and because they spend of their property (for the support of women).
So good women are the obedient, guarding in secret that which Allah hath guarded.
As for those from whom ye fear rebellion, admonish them and banish them to beds apart, and scourge them. Then if they obey you, seek not a way against them.
Anyways, you cannot make a point in the name of Christianity when your actions are essentially inhumane and without any shred of forgiveness. In other words: if you rip out the pretense of the Seven Deadly Sins, John Doe is a self-aggrandising serial killer who has a movie made about him called "Se7en."
Det. Somerset: I don't doubt you believe your own bullshit, John, but it seems to me that you're overlooking a glaring contradiction. If you were chosen by a higher power, and if your hand was forced.. it seems strange to me that you'd get such enjoyment out of it. You enjoyed torturing those people. This doesn't seem in keeping with martyrdom, does it?
John Doe: [deflecting] I doubt I enjoyed it any more, than Detective Mills would enjoy time alone with me in a room without windows..
By the way, there is John Doe's frequent use of the word "should," which is always a tell-tale marker of a radioactive gamma male. "Should" is a word mid-wits use when they're terribly aware of real life's imbalances, injustices and inconsistancies, but lack the wisdom to embrace it as is, so they end up projecting their mental model outward in an attempt to bring order to chaos, and this also includes having other people abide by some given order. They are essentially hall monitors, of varying sorts. You know how irksome it gets when some Redditor pops up and attempts to give you "constructive criticism" out of the blue, knowing that he'll be backed by the hivemind without fail if you retaliate:
(Some Nerd): You made a mistake putting it on your blog. Where you really meant to post that piece of info is the official such-and-such wiki.
That is John Doe in a nutshell. He's just mustered up the courage to bring his twisted ideas into action. In fact, I'd find it more believable, and far more interesting if John Doe was instead a Muslim who had slain these people in Allah's name:
Mohammed: Innocent? Is that supposed to be funny? An obese man? A disgusting man who if you saw him while you were eating, you wouldn't even think of finishing your meal. When I hung that pork shop manager out to dry, you both must have been secretly thanking me for that one! This is a guy who dedicated his life to fooling my people, with every breath he could muster, into eating haram meat and corrupting their bodies to the core! A woman! A WOMAN!! So impure and ugly, how she uses her naked body to seduce men into submission for her! And let's not forget that disease-spreading fag. Only in a world this shitty, could you call them innocent with a straight face! But why bother explaining another word to you fools, when you can experience Allah's greatness first-hand?
[He grabs Mills' beeper to radio-activate C4 surgically implanted in his penis]
Mohammed: Suck my cock infidels - Allahu Akbar!!
[blows up everyone in police car]
[72 virgins]Announcer: Terrorists win!
Mais oui! How's that for multiculturalism? The only thing is that such a movie would never be made today, because Hollywood executives + leftists would whine that Islam is really a religion of peace, and unlike Christians who have watched John Doe's SE7EN, hardcore Muslims would cry outrage because deep down it's struck a chord in their medieval-era doctrine.
Also, with these video eses. I have this quote from American Psycho running through my head as I watch:
I gain no deeper knowledge of this; no new knowledge is extracted from this telling.
